Location: It lies on the floodplains of the Sapta Koshi River in the south-eastern Terai.
Purpose: The reserve was gazetted to preserve habitat for the only remaining population of Wild buffalo, known as Arna (Bubalus arnee).
Ramsar Site: In 1987, Koshi Tappu was declared a Ramsar site, recognizing it as a wetland of international significance.
Buffer Zone: The government of Nepal declared a buffer zone (173.5 square kilometers) surrounding the reserve in 2004.
Features: The Sapta Koshi River is one of the three main tributaries of the Ganges. Rapid and intense flooding occurs during the rainy season.
Climate: The reserve experiences three distinct seasons, hot summer, monsoon with heavy rainfall, and a cooler winter.
Flora: The vegetation mainly consists of tall grasslands, with small patches of Khair-sissoo scrub forest and deciduous mixed riverine forest.
Wildlife: The reserve is home to various species, including the last surviving population of Wild buffalo (around 159 individuals), Hog deer, Wild boar, Spotted deer, Blue bull, and Rock Python.
Birds: Approximately 441 bird species (including 14 endemic species) have been recorded, making it a paradise for birdwatchers. The Koshi Barrage is crucial for migratory birds.
Fish: The Koshi River hosts 80 species of fish, including the endangered Gharial crocodile and Gangetic dolphin.
